Lakers Hire JJ Redick. Did Rob Pelinka Get this Right? What Assistants Should be Targeted?
At long (like, loooooong) last, the Lakers have finally hired a coach. As widely anticipated, save one brief/public with UConn's Dan Hurley, the new guy in town is JJ Redick, whose communication skills, charisma, and basketball intellect are being bet on to offset having never coached anybody older than children. Is this a brilliant roll of the dice? The Lakers flocking to the shiniest of objects and starriest of names without any real regard for a process? A little bit of both? Only time will tell, but there's a lot at stake for the purple and gold moving forward.

EMERGENCY PODCAST: Lakers Hire JJ Redick to be Their Next Head Coach
Переглядів 6 тис.4 години тому
In the end, we finished where we started. JJ Redick-who began the process as the frontrunner, then went back to the front of the line after a brief flirtation with UConn head coach Dan Hurley-agreed to a four-year deal with the Lakers, worth about $8 million a year. So the Lakers got their man to succeed Darvin Ham. There's plenty of intrigue built into this move, whether you're talking about t...
Has Monty Williams Entered the Lakers' Coaching Discussion? Plus, Rich Paul on LeBron and Bronny.
Переглядів 6 тис.4 години тому
Well, the scriptwriters are at it again. Have we entered PLOT TWIST character? Monty Williams the same Monty Williams who was a prime choice for the Lakers a few years back and turned them down before they eventually landed on Frank Vogel was let go by Detroit with approximately 11 years and $9 billion left on his contract. So with the process seemingly stalled after what were described by some...
How Big Is the Gap Between the Lakers and Elite Western Conference Teams?
Переглядів 7 тис.7 годин тому
With the Finals in our collective rearview mirror (maybe not THAT far in our collective rearview mirror but nonetheless in it), ESPN has its first edition of the 2024-25, admittedly way too early Power Rankings. Of course, the idea of ranking teams now, when so much is going to change and we are almost literally as far as we'll be before anyone plays ball again, might seem silly. And it is, if ...
Does Boston Winning an 18th NBA Title Change Dynamics for the Lakers? Will they Finally Hire Redick?
Переглядів 6 тис.9 годин тому
Yeah, everyone saw. In a series that was about as lacking in drama as a series could have, the Boston Celtics polished off the Dallas Mavericks Monday night to win an 18th NBA title, putting them back ahead of the Lakers for most in league history. And it doesn't take a crackerjack NBA analyst to note that they are in much better position to keep adding to that total than the Lakers. There may ...
Redick Interviews in Los Angeles. Will the Lakers Have a Coach Before the Draft?
Переглядів 8 тис.12 годин тому
JJ Redick was in LA this weekend, meeting with the team for his "most formal" round of interviews yet, via the LA Times. How quickly the Lakers move from here is a matter of debate. On the one hand, it certainly seems like the Lakers are facing a time crunch, with the draft rolling around at the end of the month, and free agency starting soon after. But according to Adrian Wojnarowski, there is...
Is JJ Redick The Frontrunner (Again) for Lakers Coach? Plus, Dan Hurley Talks Money.
Переглядів 7 тис.19 годин тому
The Dan Hurley Saga is over, sort of. As the postmortem continues on this relatively short but extremely interesting chapter in Lakers history (people still talk about Coach K turning them down 20 years later), there's still the matter of finding the coach for next season. To that end, you'll never guess who is, reportedly, back in front... Or maybe you will. That's JJ Redick. He's set to meet ...
Jerry West, Lakers and NBA Legend, Dies at 86. We Remember a Brilliant, Unique, and Complex Icon.

No NBA franchise, save perhaps Celtics the has more names who could legitimately be placed on its proverbial Mt. Rushmore than the Los Angeles Lakers. And even with all that competition, it would be impossible to put together an honorary like that without including Jerry West. A man who would make a compelling case to be on the league's Mt. Rushmore, were one to be made. He is a Hall of Famer t...
Did the Lakers Get Played By Dan Hurley? Will the Coaching Search Reboot with JJ Redick?

A couple days after Dan Hurley turned down the Lakers, the news around the NBA is still very much centered around the fact that Dan Hurley turned down the Lakers. Dan Hurley Turns Down Lakers, Stays at UConn. Where Did the Lakers Go Wrong?
Переглядів 5 тис.День тому
It was going to be a big Monday one way or another, but it went the wrong way for the Lakers. UConn head coach Dan Hurley will remain UConn head coach. He turned down an offer from the Lakers reported to be worth $70 million over six years. That's a lot of money, no doubt, but was it the right offer for this situation? Or even close? A very solid argument can be made the Lakers decided to play ...
EMERGENCY POD: Dan Hurley Turns Down Reported 6yr/$70M From Lakers. Not Big Enough? What Next?

Well, the news indeed arrived on Monday, and it wasn't what Lakers fans wanted to hear. Dan Hurley said thanks, but no thanks, to the Lakers, and will remain in Storrs, Connecticut to coach the Huskies. So the Lakers are still without a head coach, except now they have a high profile failure in the headlines. Why did they fail? It's possible that Hurley was never leaving, and was only using the...

Andy is always so negative. JJ will do fine. Listen to him talk about all the subtle details of the game. He's at least 25 IQ points smarter than Ham. The biggest threat to JJ is him being blamed for the Lakers being in 11 place, when the obvious cause is a regressed 40 year old "superstar". We all know Bron is a coach killer and NEVER takes the blame.

Pelinka had no experience when he was hired by clueless Jeanie. So he has no qualms hiring peopke like ham and jj with no experience as head coach and 4 years too long. We are still paying ham for 2 years. Next season will be a gamble. This assured that our highest ceiling is less than last season.

Pelinka messed this one up too. He's an awful GM. Coaching turnover every 2 years. Roster turnover every single offseason. Zero team continuity or chemistry. The Westbrook trade was a bad decision from the start. Everyone seemed to see that, BUT Pelinka. Not resigning Caruso. Trading Kuz. Getting FLEECED in EVERY SINGLE TRADE by better, more experienced GMs. Just an unmitigated disaster as a GM in every way.. Lakers hired a GM with ZERO experience and it's led to the Lakers becoming a joke. Now Pelinka is hiring a coach with ZERO experience. In 3 years, when Lebron retires and the Lakers have literally no viable young players to build around, this team will be irrelevant and will be a perennial Lottery team for the next decade and due to Pelinka's ineptitude.

Hey guys. With JJ as the new coach, you know who I wanna see on the Lakers next year? CP3. I think that's a great match. CP3 coming off the bench in a JJ offense with LeBron off-ball, with AD in the post, I think there's some fun to be had there.

Well, I don't personally agree with your overall assessment of AD (and FWIW, he scored more total points than LeBron, despite averaging fewer attempts per game and essentially no threes), but in certain respects, it doesn't even matter whether we agree. Everything you're saying about AD may (or may not) be true, but the fact remains, the way this team is currently constructed, he is their best, most important player. That's the setup. You know what I mean? It's hard to dispute. What to do with that is a different question, but them's still the facts. Appreciate you watching. AK

@@LockedOnLakers LBJ shot 1 more attempt per game than AD🤷 Does Luka taking 5 more attempts per game than LBJ make him better?? I mean the numbers say LBJ way more efficient than Luka in field goal percentage to the 3ball yet being less ball dominant than Luka. Is Luka better??...he will never make an all defensive team like other greats. You can't just say someone is better when the numbers and respect around the league say other wise

How do we measure JJ's performance?.... Simple He's already cleared the bar by a mile if you're comparing him to Darwin Ham who 1. lost the locker room completely to the point where not a single player, not one spoke a positive word or 2 about him thrub out the past season. 2. He was way over his head when it comes to Xs and Os strategy, game management, rotations etc 3. Complete lack of accountability was obvious in his media addresses... JJs going to be Red Auerbach or Pat Rilry compared to Ham in the above aspects But if you're going to measure JJ on championship or bust... Then you know he's already lost that battle with the current roster. So, the way you measure JJ is 1. Have the young talent have shown growth and maturity within a system and team identity? 2. Can JJ produce wins by out-scheming the opponent more often than not? 3. How well he uses the depth and talent on this team in the right roles?.. The "Alfreds" as he likes to call them. 4. How much he's able to get getb his stars to take the regular season seriously without f***ing around while not wearing them out. If he can get this team to a 2nd rd or conf finals, it will be a smashing success for JJ realistically with this roster

It does sound a touch like the front office can't win with the media at times. Previously the critiscm was that there's no process, they're railroading to Reddick too quickly, without due process, and by now the accusation is that they've taken too long, dithered around, which is being dubbed as indecision.

Not a fan of this hire unless it is primarily for the post LeBron era. The Lakers always go for the splashy hire when good and competent is probably all you need to be successful, case in point Frank Vogel who was their fourth choice. The last big swing like Luke didn't work out. Personally, I don't think the Lakers should have even considered candidates who didn't have head coaching experience. I was against the Ham hiring last time and thought Stotts would have been a much better option. Heck, Scott Brooks would be a better win now option. My only hope is that they are invested in JJ and ride this out even if the next two years are a mess.

  • @edwardt7809

Andy -- 4 years for a coach that has ZERO experience is a great deal of confidence in the potential of that coach. And from Reddick's perspective, if this is a dumpster fire, 4 years isn't an eternity. But, if it works, the Lakers will no doubt extend the contract a couple of years into it. If coaching doesn't work, broadcasting will ALWAYS be there for JJ. 4 years in NO WAY undercuts JJ.

    • @LockedOnLakers
      @LockedOnLakers День тому

Like I said during the show, in a vacuum, totally agree. It would arguably be an overly generous deal. But given the Lakers’ history of impatience (and frankly, neither knowing what they want in a coach or even valuing the position in the first place), that specific context changes the equation. To me, at least. It’s a very unusually weird set of circumstances. Appreciate you watching. AK

Typical media (and fan) groupthink. None of the Lakers' last 7 coaches have worked out, so why not give JJ a try if they think he can be successful? Surround him with great assistants and boost his confidence (fans and Lakers media), instead of acting like he has no chance. Also, the FO can show confidence in JJ in their press conference.
